Energy data ‘marketplace’ wins $2.7M grant for national roll-out to homes, businesses, schools

Wattwatchers is leading a three-year, Australia-wide roll-out of its cutting-edge energy management technologies to homes, businesses and schools through a project called My Energy Marketplace (MEM).

The Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA)* is subsidising part of the estimated $8.2 million total cost of installing 5,000 homes and small businesses, plus 250 schools, with a grant of $2.7 million.

The concept for the MEM is best described as being ‘like an app store for energy’, which aims to harness the power of data to empower electricity consumers in the technology-enabled ‘New Energy’ era.

Deployments for the MEM will start in 2020, with Wattwatchers working with community and commercial partners to recruit and engage participants, and with technology partners to offer a choice of apps and services.

Under data sharing agreements with energy users that put consumer data rights at the centre, Wattwatchers will enable sites to join energy management programs, and provide new data services to increase reliability of power grids as they integrate rising levels of distributed energy.

The MEM model being adopted by Wattwatchers is highly collaborative, with foundation contributing technology partners Accurassi, Cogniss and Solar Schools; an anchor research partner in the Australian National University (ANU) Battery Storage and Grid Integration Program; and initial community channel partners 1 Million Women and Renew (formerly the Alternative Technology Association).

A number of other organisations have given strong support to the MEM in its proposal stages, or have expressed interest in coming on board, and a series of additional partner announcements will be made as the project gets started and gains momentum.

Potential technology, recruitment channel and research partners for the MEM can register interest here, and individual householders, businesses and schools can sign on to the mailing list to receive future announcements and offers here.
